I’ve traveled extensively around the world. Some destinations were one-time visits. Others called me back for multiple trips to fully experience everything on my ‘to do’ list. But there’s one place so breathtaking and enchanting that I keep returning again and again: Yosemite.
I’ve likely spent more vacation time at Yosemite National Park than anywhere else. If I had to guess, I’m far from tired of it! I could spend hours, even days, sharing all the incredible sights and activities here. But if this is your first visit, it’s essential to focus on the park’s must-see highlights.

Tips for your first visit to Yosemite
1. Head indoors
Although I’ve visited Yosemite National Park many times, the drive in never fails to take my breath away. It’s one of those views that never grows old—one you won’t want to look away from. But trust me, you should. As captivating as Yosemite’s natural beauty is, there’s so much more to the park than just admiring the mountains.
One of my first stops in Yosemite is always the Valley Visitor Center. It’s a fantastic place to chat with local rangers. If it’s your first visit, the informative videos offer a helpful introduction and orientation before you dive into the wilderness.
If I find myself near Wawona, I also make a point to visit the visitor center there. It’s a smaller, quieter spot. I like to pick up souvenirs there. It offers a more relaxed experience compared to the busier centers.

2. Enjoy ONE Waterfall
Some people say, “If you’ve seen one waterfall, you’ve seen them all.” Clearly, those people have never been to Yosemite! You need to plan to stay for a month or more. Otherwise, there’s no way to see every waterfall on a single visit. This is particularly true if it’s your first time.
So, choose one and save the rest for another trip. Which waterfall should you pick? I can easily narrow it down to three options. If you’re visiting Yosemite with kids or anyone who finds long walks challenging, your best choices are Lower Yosemite Falls. You can also see the creek there. Another option is Bridalveil Fall. Both are accessible via short, paved paths.
For those who are a bit more adventurous and physically able, I recommend hiking to the Vernal Fall footbridge. You might even consider pushing on to the top of the falls. Just be prepared: the trail beyond the footbridge is quite steep!
3. Venture further afield
I love Yosemite for many reasons. One of them is that I never feel limited to just the National Park itself. There’s a wealth of natural beauty to explore throughout the surrounding area.
I like to take at least one day trip from Yosemite. To be honest, I often find myself drawn to June Lake! I usually enjoy the ‘loop’. This is a scenic drive that takes you around June Lake, Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake. Still, June Lake remains my favorite.
If you’re after stunning views, June Lake is hard to beat. It offers breathtaking sights of the Sierra Nevada mountains as well as the Yosemite border. Plus, it’s a popular spot for watersports, so there’s always something fun happening on the water.
I only make this trip if Route 120 is open. Otherwise, the drive doubles from three hours to six!

4. Keep it short
During my first visit to Yosemite National Park, I took a hiking trail. The hike ended up taking much longer than expected. This caused me to miss out on many highlights. I never even reached the giant sequoias. Don’t fall into the same trap!
For your first trip, stick to shorter trails so you have time to explore other park attractions. If you’re in good shape, the Four Mile Trail (which is actually 4.8 miles) is a great choice. The trail is moderately challenging. It offers stunning views along the way. It leads directly to Glacier Point, giving you two incredible experiences in one hike.
If you’d rather not hike back down, the Glacier Point Hiker’s Bus usually runs during the summer. It offers a quicker and more relaxing ride back to the valley. This gives your legs a well-deserved break!
5. Come back for more
If you choose to return to Yosemite National Park—and you will—there’s even more waiting to be explored. Countless new adventures and sights await.
Next time, consider visiting the iconic Tunnel View lookout or wandering among the majestic giant sequoias. You might also explore the nature center or take advantage of the free valley shuttles for convenient sightseeing.
